Rise Up

The Tudor Choristers’ 58th season opens during the Lenten season at St George's. The program features African-American spirituals—songs of inspiration, sharing messages of hope and freedom. Arising from enslaved people with precious few resources, the music encapsulates the sheer will to live and joy triumphing over despair. The choir will be joined by special guest artist, internationally renowned Wiradjuri soprano, Shauntai Batzke.

Lauridsen the Mystic

Imbued with Greek modes and Gregorian plainchant, in contemporary yet highly accessible settings, Morton Lauridsen's breathtaking music appeals to all lovers of choral music. By popular demand, the choir presents an entire program of sacred works composed by this award-winning composer. Musicologist Nick Strimple has said Lauridsen is the only American composer in history who can be called a mystic. The program will include O Magnum Mysterium, Lux Aeterna and Ave Maria.

Sing Nowell!

Our final subscription concert for 2019 features selections from Rachmaninov's All-Night Vigil (Vespers) Op. 37. Premiered in 1915, it was rarely heard in Russia following the 1917 revolution when sacred music was suppressed by the government.

The multi-movement piece found a resurgence in the West in the 1960s and has since become one of the most loved and dramatic a cappella choral works of the genre. The composer remarked, “Even in my dreams I could not have imagined that I would write such a work”. The concert will also include traditional carol singing. Don't forget to collect your complimentary mince pie at the end of the concert.
